Uruguay - Continent South America - South America, which occupies a surface area of 17.6 million square kilometers, is bordered on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and on the west by the Pacific Ocean.
Covered by the Cordillera of the Andes from north to south, South America also houses the Amazon, which is more than 6700 km long, from which the basin of the same name that covers about 8 million km² originates.
Given the vast size of the continent, the climates are extremely varied, ranging from tropical to polar. In the north, the climate is tropical and governed by dry and rainy seasons; regions in the south have cold climates.
Home to more than 335 million people, the population of South America is highly concentrated in urban areas, with more than 80% of this population living in cities. The biggest cities in South America are Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires and Lima.
