World Maps - Central America

Central America - Central America, which includes countries on the continent and islands in the Caribbean Sea, is situated in a tropical area.
Central America is a region full of steep mountains and volcanic peaks that were formed from collisions between several plates. The isthmus that constitutes Central America is the result of the meeting of the Caribbean and Cocos plates.
The climate is generally tropical and varies with altitude in the mountainous regions. Humid areas are covered by vast tropical forests that house a dense underbrush possessing highly evolved animal life.
There are about 131 million inhabitants as opposed to about 37 million people in the West Indies.
