Africa - The second largest continent in the world, Africa covers more than 30 million square kilometers. To the north lies the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea; to the west, the Atlantic Ocean, and to the east, the Indian Ocean.
Although there is substantial climatic variation, Africa is mainly characterized by arid and desert areas, notably the world's biggest desert, the Sahara. Central and West Africa have a tropical and equatorial climate.
Another feature is the Nile, an extremely long river of almost 6700 km that originates in Kenya and flows into the Mediterranean Sea.
Recognized as having been the first home to mankind, Africa is populated by more than 780 million inhabitants.
